Younguee Yoo is a filmmaker whose work centers on the cinematic interpretation of mythology. She has written, produced, and directed a total of 121 films, earning 96 awards, including Best Director, at major international film festivals worldwide. Since her 2007 work Form is Emptiness, Emptiness is Form, she has written, produced, and directed 119 short and mid-length films, receiving 71 awards at major international film festivals worldwide. Her cinema has been recognized by critics as “a paradigm shift from films of looking to films of thinking,” “a film with a resonance of the soul,” and work through which “she may be said to have created a genre of her own.” In 2017, her first feature film as writer, producer, and director, Sermon on the Mount, was invited to prominent international film festivals, beginning with the Moscow International Film Festival. The film received 22 awards, including Best Director, and was screened at distinguished academic institutions including Yale University, UCLA, and Lomonosov Moscow State University. In February 2020, it was also screened at United Nations Headquarters in New York. Following its UN presentation, Sermon on the Mount was made available to the entire inmate population of Sing Sing Prison in New York through in-cell monitors as part of a rehabilitation initiative. In 2025, Yoo produced and directed her second feature film, A Vast Algorithm of Humanity: The Movie, which received the Silver Remi Award at the 58th Houston International Film Festival. In 2026, the film was awarded Best Fiction film at the 24th Dhaka international film festival. Yoo has also served as a juror at the Moscow International Film Festival (2017), the Dhaka International Film Festival (2019), and the Nepal Human Rights International Film Festival (2025). In 2006, she founded the nonprofit incorporated association Making the World Beautiful Through Film Corp. In 2021, the organization was formally associated with the United Nations Department of Global Communications, and it continues its activities in connection with the United Nations. In September 2023, she attended the High-level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage, the High-level Meeting on the Fight Against Tuberculosis, and the High-level Meeting Commemorating the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons during the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
